The celebration took place at the National Schools for Democracy conference in Kyiv, June. 29-30. The event was hosted by EWC.
Welcome speeches were given by Pavlo Khobzey Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oleksandr Yarema Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, and Mårten Ehnberg Head of the Council of Europe Office in Kyiv. The Ambassador from Norway to Ukraine, Ole T. Horpestad gave a talk on the cooperation between Norway and Ukraine.
EWC Executive Director, Ana Perona-Fjeldstad, gave the key note speech on the topic “The Role of the School in the 21st century: Learning to Live in a Democracy”.
The Fair of Good Practices «How to change the school?» was the highlight of the conference. Participants were eager to share their stories on democratic development of schools in all 3 key areas: teaching and learning, democratic governance and culture, and partnership with local community. Doing so school representatives could also learn of the good practices implemented by other peer schools from all over Ukraine.
During the conference, EWC presented the manual “Civic responsibility: 80 exercises for developing citizenship and social competences in 5-9 grades” manual developed by the Schools for Democracy’s team based on the Council of Europe materials.
Co-authors of the manual organized master classes in six subjects (Math’s, Ukrainian language and literature, geography, physical training, history, and foreign literature) to pilot the activities and receive feedback from education professionals and students. It is worth mentioning that the manual was developed especially on the request from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine as a supporting tool of recently renewed curriculum for the secondary school.
Programme alumni schools will keep in touch with the help of a non-formal network for sharing experiences, providing assistance and consultations to each other. The starting point of the further cooperation is the common celebration of specific dates. Participants of the conference have agreed to arrange shared events and projects on the day of Europe (5 May), day of dignity and freedom (21 Nov), and the international day of safe internet (6 Feb).
