EWC in Expert Panel on Citizenship Training in Arab Countries

EWC contributed to an international seminar in Beirut, Lebanon hosted by the Aydan Foundation, aiming for a more holistic approach to teacher training in citizenship education in Arab countries. The seminar brought together insights and reflections from experiences with citizenship education in Arab and other countries, based on real needs in teacher training and good practices that already exist.

Drawing on experiences from several EWC projects in Europe and relevant Council of Europe materials, EWC presented two practices and lessons learnt in teacher training: Dealing with controversial issues in the classroom, and the CoE Referance Framework for Competences for a Democratic Culture.

The results of the seminar will inform the development of a curriculum for teacher training in Arab countries. The aim is for the new curriculum to include updated theories on citizenship and related concepts, as well as the necessary skills that a citizenship teacher should acquire and put into practice. A strong emphasis will be put on the self-awareness of teachers, in terms of their own attitudes and values, and thus the consciousness of their own biases, communal memory, and dynamic identity.
