Hegnhuset opened at Utøya

Polish and Norwegian youth participated at the opening of the new learning center «Hegnhuset» at Utøya July 19. The training was organized by EWC, Utøya and the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights and is a part of the project “Learning democracy at Utøya”. The day before the polish students visited the 22 July Center in Oslo in which they learned more about July 22, 2011.

In “Hegnhuset” the students participated in different workshops addressing topics such as freedom of speech, intercultural understanding and how to act against hate speech. One part of the training was to engage students in dialogue about democratic values and dilemmas. In a democracy there are different opinions, ways of being, and ways of living. A the same time, everyone hold the same human rights. One question addressed in the workshop was: How do we, as democratic citizens, respond to diversity?

During the different sessions the students produced material for the exhibition in “Hegnhuset”. When they left there were post-its, drawings and texts on the wall expressing engagement, diversity-equality and how to act against hate speech.
