School for Democracy in Ukraine expands to new areas

The third cycle of the “Schools for Democracy” explores new locations on the map of Ukraine as 47 new schools were welcomed aboard at a kickoff event marking the beginning of the third and enhanced cycle of the programme.

The first training for school teams took place in Kyiv 26-29 January 2018. Schools from Kaniv, Zolotonosha (Cherkasy region), Losynivka, Ostra (Chernihiv region), Verkhivets, Lykhivka, Verkhniodniprovsk and Apostolove (Dnipro region) participated in the training.

During the intense days of the face-to-face training, school teams learned more about education for democratic citizenship and human rights and learned how to establish links with the local community. School representatives came up with suggestions for possible democratic changes at their schools based on principles set out by the Council of Europe Charter on EDC/HRE and the rpogrammes’s Tool for Democratic School Development. Each school had a chance to present its initiatives and find future partner institution at the fair organized at the end of training’s first day.

“Four days passed extremely fast! We have made the first step – got acquainted with new methodology and self-evaluation tools. What is left now is to share the experience we have gained with our colleagues back home and to move from abstract talks and generalizations to concrete actions!” – commented Roman Shevchun from Losynivka

The second training for school teams (2-5 February, in Lviv) brought together schools form Voznesensk, Shostka, Kremenchuk, Hlobyno, Pervomaisk, Novoborysivka, Radisne, Pryluky.

“Today I understood that for implementing democratic changes at school we don’t need to wait for additional resources, as most of the suggested initiatives can be done starting from tomorrow. I hope that I will come back home with lots of useful ideas after the training” – added Larysa Dvoretska, school head of Voznesenska gymnasium No1 after the second training day

Four more introductory trainings for school teams from all regions of the country will be arranged by the end of February. Thereafter experts from the National Network of Programme’s trainers will visit all 47 schools to conduct whole school workshops and elaborate an action plan in accordance with the key Programme’s areas.
