Promoting free speech
What are students most afraid of? What hurts them and what do they like the most? Those were the questions that started a project to promote free speech in Turkish schools.
The project was planned at the 2014 Regional Summer Academy in Montenegro. Once back at their school, the team started surveying the situation. The students were asked three question.
What did they fear the most?
What hurts them?
What they like the most?
The aim was to let the students express themselves and find out what concerned them the most. The Regional Summer Academy team also carried out seminars for the other teachers where they shared the knowledge they had gained in Montenegro. Parents were also involved through information letters and meetings after school.
The project was noticed by the Ministry of Education which made Silifke Gaza Anatolian High School a pilot school for promoting democratic changes in the educational system.
