Teaching human rights to everyone
School № 16 in the Russian town of Emanzhelinsk set up a school-based human rights education project «From legal enlightenment to civil society», which later received coverage on Russian local news.
Teacher Oxana Zazulyak explains that their project is not only about teaching students about human rights, but teachers, parents and the rest of the community as well.
That is why parents have participated in the classes, working in pairs with the students. Among other things they have discussed the meaning of democracy, democratic citizenship, human rights and individual responsibility
As one of the children explains to the TV reporter:
“Through playing games, we have learned (…) that if you want to enjoy human rights, you have to protect the rights of others. Respect and treat others like you want to be respected and treated by them”.
