Trained over 100 teachers
The 2014 Regional Summer Academy team from Greece conducted 12 training session in education for democratic citizenship and human rights and reached a total of 105 teachers and head teachers.
The team from 4th Gymnasium of Korydallos and their NGO partner Allilophilia conducted surveys about the situation in their own school but also in other schools in the municipality of Piraeus.
Constantina Spiliotopoulou, the team member from Allilophilia, thereafter carried out 12 training sessions, combining theory and practice about the Council of Europe Charter on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights, methods and resources. 105 teachers participated and in turn they shared their newly acquired knowledge and skills with students, organizing workshops at their own schools.
“The workshops we held created a multiplier effect in Piraeus’ schools which carried out 67 local projects, reaching more than 1200 students”, Constantina Spiliotopoulou told EWC.
Even though the project expanded to encompass the entire community of Piraeus, a lot of activities took place at 4th Gymnasium of Korydallos as well. The school organized six extracurricular activities for the students aimed at promoting dialog, free speech and children’s rights. The students also took part in excursions and made handicrafts like posters and fliers on the topic and special days like the Human Rights Day and the Day against Racism were marked with active involvement of parents.
“In only one year, our teachers created a new school, governed by the spirit of democracy and human rights. My son now discusses his rights and responsibilities at home with us”, said Kostas Paul, father of a student.
4th Gymnasium of Korydallos plan to expand their activities next year. One of the aims is to expand the number of students involved and to create a conflict resolution team at the school.
In recent years the European Wergeland Centre has registered an increasing demand for training in education for democratic citizenship and human rights among Greek teachers. Therefore a national training on human rights in action, modelled on the Regional Summer Academy, is organized for the first time in Greece in 2015.
