In 150 schools with refugee pupils across Greece, school directors and teachers are trained to create safe and inclusive schools and classrooms where refugees are welcomed into a learning environment which aims to provide quality education to all.

A national project in Greece supported by the EEA Grants and conducted by The European Wergeland Centre (EWC) under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and in cooperation with the Institute of Educational Policy. It will start in the school year 2019-2020 and involve 150 secondary schools by 2022. The main objective of the project is that refugee children are integrated in Greek schools that are safe and inclusive for all. In order to achieve this, EWC will offer training and mentoring to school directors and teachers in 150 secondary schools with refugee pupils.
During the last three years, thousands of refugee children have enrolled in Greek schools and attended lessons, facing minor or bigger difficulties. Throughout Greece, teachers and students are preparing to welcome them into their schools and classrooms this school year too. We are looking for experienced trainers to support school leaders, teachers and pupils to develop a democratic school culture where refugee children are welcomed into safe and inclusive schools which provide quality education to all.
For almost a decade, Greece has been dealing with many multileveled and severe challenges since the onset of the ongoing financial crisis, with the influx of refugees being the most recent one. Greek schools struggle with issues connected to these challenges daily. A big number of refugee children have spent a long time away from home and as a result away from school. It is Greece’s obligation to provide the opportunity to these children to re-join education or to attend school for the first time.
The project is pre-defined in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Donor States (Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) and Greece under the programme area “Local Development and Poverty Reduction” for the EEA/Norway Grants period 2014-2021 with a grant allocation of 1,5 million Euro.
