Preparing Future Teachers in the Western Balkans

12 higher education institutions and universities and their staff from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia are trained and supported to develop and integrate new teacher education modules with a focus on practice-oriented teaching promoting citizenship, democracy and human rights.

The 3-year project, which aims to improve the quality of teacher education in the region, is funded by the The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Norway and implemented by the European Wergeland Centre in cooperation with international and Western Balkan partners.

Preparing Future Teachers in the Western Balkan: About the project

Funded by the The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Norway, this 3-year regional project is run by the European Wergeland Center in cooperation with regional partners. It provides support for higher education institutions and universities in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia, that are interested in modernizing their teacher education modules, with an aim to improve the quality of teacher education for future teachers in the region.


Teacher training modules & materials

Latest materials developed by the Council of Europe and partners including educators from the Western Balkan will be used as a basis for the development of new teacher education modules and materials adapted to the university context and needs in the region. The new teacher education modules will emphasize practice-oriented teaching promoting citizenship, democracy and human rights. 


Partners, experts and donor

Key partners of the project are six institutions from the Western Balkan region - both state-actors such as National Education Institutions under the Ministries of Education and NGOs - as well as the Zürich University of Teacher Education as international partner.


Regional Network of Universities

12 universities and higher education institutions are participating in the project. They will develop and integrate new teacher education modules with a focus on practice-oriented teaching, promoting citizenship, democracy and human rights.
