Democratic Competences in Pre-service Teacher Training

Related to: Schools for Democracy in Ukraine

Democratic Competences in Pre-service Teacher Training is aimed at improving the quality of primary school teacher education in Ukraine and empowering future teachers to develop students’ democratic competences in accordance with the New Ukrainian School Concept and the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture.


What: Training programme and expert support for teacher trainers at three leading pedagogic universities in Ukraine 

For: Lecturers at pedagogic universities

How: Renewal and launching of up to five pedagogic university courses for development of students’ democratic competences; translation and promotion of the Council of Europe’s Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture; strengthening capacity of teacher trainers by means of a special training programme.

Result: Teacher trainers in 3 leading pedagogic universities trained to integrate EDC/HRE approaches and Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture into their university courses; new study modules developing democratic competences are integrated across 3-5 university courses; up to 1000 students reached through the renewed university courses.

Iryna Sabor is responsible for the EWC's projects in Ukraine. She holds a Master's degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Oslo (Norway) and a Master's in International Economic Relations from the University of Lviv (Ukraine). She has earlier served in the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was posted at the Embassy of Ukraine in Norway.

Marina Dyshlovska is an Advisor for the programme Supporting Educational Reforms in Ukraine. Main responsibilities are to ensure appropriate implementation of the Programme and to report to the donor on Programme results.
Ms Marina Dyshlovska holds a Master’s degree in English and Swedish Philology from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Previously worked in the Norwegian Embassy in Kyiv as a project coordinator.

Khrystyna Chushak also works as a research fellow affiliated with the National Academy of Science of Ukraine and holds a PhD in Political Science from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. She has been actively involved in various educational NGOs activities targeted primarily at youth, youth workers and high school teachers since the late 1990s.
