Focus of the training activity:

This training seminar will focus on the contribution of history teaching to better mutual understanding across the continent and beyond. Which competences do history teachers need? Which skills and attitudes do they need so that they will teach history in an emancipatory way. A way that deepens the understanding of historical events and developments as well as the understanding of each other. A way that helps move beyond a narrow view of history and the stereotyping of each other.

The seminar will make use of Council of Europe project results and teacher training material, invite participants to explore together the competences, skills and attitudes needed and the ways of developing them in the day-to-day teaching practice.

Expected results:

After the seminar the participants will be better equipped to:

  • Identify distorted images/misrepresentations/reductionist representations of the other in history books
  • Develop intercultural sensitivity with regard to the representation of others in history books and lessons
  • Adopt an approach to history teaching that takes account of the different perspectives of the various actors involved in a particular historical event
  • Learn how to use the diversity present in their classroom for a deeper appreciation of history and to promote intercultural understanding
  • Establish cooperation and exchange in a Pestalozzi network of teacher
