Meeting on the development of an operational description of Intercultural Competence held in Strasbourg on February 16-17A group of experts worked two days towards a list of indicators, formulated as observable behaviors, related to the components of Intercultural Competence.
The work builds on the results of
the Think Tank on Intercultural Education, which has been co-organized of the CoE Pestalozzi Programme, the joint CoE/EU
Intercultural Cities Programme and the EWC in Oslo in October 2011. During that Think Tank the participants identified the components of intercultural competence and defined concrete, observable behavior which can be used as indicators for successful intercultural learning.
After the Think Tank, an online survey has been conducted to evaluate the list of indicators. The survey findings have shown that the tool meets the interest of practitioners for purposes of self-evaluation and evaluation of others.
At the meeting in Strasbourg the survey results were analysed and discussed. The list will be finalised in the coming weeks to be used in different follow up activities. A range of possible testing and training activities for 2012/2013 have already been discussed as well as the development of framework document on intercultural competence within the project “Intercultural education and exchanges” of the Education Department of the Council of Europe.
We encourage all practitioners who would like to take part in the testing and piloting of the tool to contact the project team.
