    Still time to register for the Summer Academy: Democracy at School 2012, taking place in Warsaw, Poland 7-15 July. Bringing together up to 30 participants, it offers training in the field of education for human rights and democratic citizenship to teams of education professionals and local community actors. Deadline for applying is 19 February.

  • Tool box for Education for Democracy

    On January 26-27, a special interest group of the Pestalozzi Network of Trainers met for the 2nd time to develop learning resources related to the recognition of learning in the context of education for democracy. This work is a part of the cooperation between CoE Pestalozzi Programme and EWC to develop a tool box for education for democracy.

  • The Intercultural Glossary Project

    The Norwegian and German students participating in the peer learning activities related to the Intercultural Glossary Project met in Trondheim January 20-23; Visiting places that are linked to the idea and construction of «Norwegian cultural heritage» and getting to know the narratives, interpretations and debates related to them. It was closely related to the conceptual learning activities.

  • Democratic School Development

    Educators' Consultation in Hamburg: During the 2-day workshop, 13-14 January, the research perspectives the students had developed based on their work with EDC and democratic school development during the fall term were successfully linked to concrete democratic school development projects in the Hamburg region.

    A Statement by Martyn Barrett on Intercultural Competence is now published. In his statement, Barrett places the conceptualization of Intercultural Competence in the framework of Council of Europe policy and provides a profound overview regarding theoretical approaches towards Intercultural Competence.

    Jenny Berglund is senior lecturer and researcher. She is particularly interested in Islam and religious education. Her dissertation, Teaching Islam, Islamic Religious Education at Muslim Schools in Sweden examines how Islamic Religious Education (IRE) is formed as a confessional school subject within the framework and under the jurisdiction of the Swedish school system.

      More determination is needed to make human rights real

      “Europe must move with more determination from rhetoric to enforcement of human rights standards” stated the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, when presenting the last annual report of his mandate.

      Teachers afraid to broach human rights in class

      Scottish teachers are too scared of upsetting parents to teach human rights, worrying new research has found. Student teachers said they feared that “all hell would break loose” if they taught pupils about emotive human rights issues. Meanwhile, students who did want to cover human rights during their teaching practice were actively discouraged by qualified teachers who were concerned that it was “controversial”.

      Teaching Respect for All

      Launched on 18 January 2012, the UNESCO-USA-Brazil project Teaching Respect for All aims to design a curricular framework to fight racism and promote tolerance, which countries can adapt to their respective contexts and needs. The project will also elaborate educational materials for addressing racism and tolerance in education. These tools will build on lessons learned and current good practices in the field. The materials will be disseminated worldwide by UNESCO through education ministries as well as the Organization’s extensive networks, including the UNESCO Associated Schools.

      International Course “Human Rights for Development”

      The first edition of the international course “Human Rights for Development” (HR4DEV), takes place from 30 July to 24 August 2012 in Antwerp, Belgium. What are the potential and limits of human rights for development? What is the added value of children’s rights’ approaches to global problems such as poverty, environmental challenges, armed conflict and migration? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in the course, from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective.

      Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training

      The United Nations General Assembly in New York adopted the Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training on 19 December. This landmark document recognises the right of every one of the planet's seven billion people to have access to human rights education, a lifelong process involving all ages, all parts of society, and every kind of education, formal and informal.
