Ólöf Thorhildur ÓLAFSDÓTTIR, Director of Education and Languages at the Council of Europe gave a key presentation at the International Symposium on Interculturalism taking place in Montreal earlier this year.

In her paper she refers to a number of instruments prepared by the Council of Europe in the fields of education and intercultural understanding. It also describes the obstacles to the establishment and success of intercultural education programmes.

Finally, the prospects for the coming years are also considered.
