“Education under Attack 2010” examines how conflict and violence continue to pose a direct threat to the goal of Education for All. Politically and ideologically motivated attacks on teachers, students and school buildings are worldwide on the rise. These attacks are perpetrated by non-state armed groups and state actors alike.

These fact sheets "Europe is more than you think", published by the Council of Europe, include issues such as human rights, social cohesion, cultural diversity and democracy. They aim to support secondary school teachers in their work.

Schools and teachers are increasingly being asked to use a global outlook in the classroom, and to appreciate the issues of identities and diversity within a culturally cohesive context. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have been leading the way on pushing for a greater global focus in citizenship education and argue that young people in the UK should consider themselves world or global citizens. Large and small development NGOs have been keen to push their agendas and have found Citizenship Education a good outlet to do so in schools.

This publication sets out the core competences needed by teachers to put democratic citizenship and human rights into practice in the classroom, throughout the school and in the wider community.

The manual contains lessons and service-learning projects. This manual is designed for use by beginners and experts alike. The guide can be used with a broad range of learners, particularly if portions of the lessons are adapted. However, the main target groups in mind for the activities are upper middle school and secondary school students, as well as university students (ages 14-20).
