On Saturday March 9, EWCs Head of Research, Claudia Lenz, introduced the Tool “Recognizing Intercutural Competence”, which has been developed by the Council of Europe Pestalozzi Programme, the Council of Europe Intercultural Cities Programme and the EWC, to 60 Macedonian teachers taking part in the conference on Integrated Education, organized by the Nansen Dialog Centre in Skopje.

Building on previous work in preparation of human rights teachers in secondary schools, in 2013, the OSCE Office in Tajikistan will expand its engagement with the Teacher’s Training Institute of the Ministry of Education, by supporting follow-on training of teachers in theory and methodology of human rights education. The workshop, taking place in Norway 9-13 September, aims to familiarize the participants with ways of developing and assessing intercultural competence. Short keynote presentations as well as many activities, discussions and interactive sessions will be on the program. Concepts and theories of intercultural learning, evaluation and assessment will be introduced and exemplified in learning activities. A recently developed evaluation tool will be tried out helping participants to recognize and keep track of their development in intercultural competence. Application Deadline: May 1

The American journal Religion & Education has published a special issue dedicated to the work of Robert Jackson. The articles are all written by former doctoral students of Professor Jackson. A much expanded version of the special issue will be published as Religion in Education: Innovation in International Research, edited by Joyce Miller, Kevin O’Grady and Ursula McKenna.

Education, culture of democracy and intercultural dialogue were the focus of the international conference, 'Competences for a Culture of Democracy and Intercultural Dialogue: A Political Challenge and Values' organised in the framework of the Andorran Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, in Andorra la Vella, 7-8 February. EWC's Executive Director took part in the conference, and was the rapporteur for the session on 'Competences for a culture of democracy'.
