Seminars on Education for Citizenship in Russia

1. Activities

Seminars in Rostov-on-Don and Stavropol
Both events gathered representatives of regional political and intellectual elite and secondary school teachers. The proceedings opened with a lecture by Prof. Aleksey Kara-Murza (Russian Academy of Science) devoted to the roots of education for citizenship in Russian history, continued by a round table discussion on contemporary practices of civic education.
 
It was followed by an interactive training seminar for teachers, who got acquainted with the Council of Europe (CoE) Charter on EDC/HRE as a framework for education for citizenship in the CoE member states. They also worked with a set of CoE practical tools on education for democratic citizenship in view of their own experiences from their schools and local communities. The programme will continue with an international seminar in Budapest in July this year followed by a series of regional training seminars in October.


President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mr. Jean-Claude Mignon, visited The European Wergeland Centre
Mr. Mignon and his delegation was greeted by EWC Executive Director, Ms Ana Perona-Fjeldstad, on April 5th. The Director gave Mr. Mignon an update on EWC projects and activities, emphasizing the close cooperation with the Council of Europe in implementing Council of Europe policy recommendations in the members states. Mr. Mignon strongly acknowledged the aims and achivements of the Centre, and expressed his desire to strenghten the cooperation between the Centre and the Parliamentary Assembly.


International Contact Group on Citizenship and Human Rights Education
EWC's Executive Director took part in the second meeting of the International Contact Group on Citizenship and Human Rights Education in Strasbourg 11-12 April. The Contact Group was set up at the Fifth Inter-Institutional Meeting (Strasbourg, 2011) with a view to ensure close cooperation among European and international initiatives in the field of citizenship and human rights education.


The Symposium «Right Wing Extremism and Right Wing Populism in Europe» held in Rostock and Warnemünde/Germany on April 4-6
The topic of the symposium is timely with the economical crisis in Europe, accompanied by unemployment and poverty, mobilizes nationalistic and racist attitudes. How can these be countered? EWC’s Head of Research presented the project “Democratic Readiness against anti-Semitism and Racism”, highlighting the importance of inclusive and democratic school cultures in order to make young people competent to participate in today’s diverse and pluralistic societies.


2. Resources

Preventing on-line hate speech through social media and democratic participation
This new statement by Vitor Tomé highlights the need to involve the educators in the current Council of Europe Campaign Against Hate Speech. In order to support young people to become responsible agents of social media, educators need to be aware of the opportunities and risks related to students' social media habits.

4. Calendar

22 May: Diverse Teachers for Diverse Learners - International conference taking place in Norway, organised by Hedmark University College and the Diverse Teachers for Diverse Learners network. Scholars are invited to share research and critically debate how teacher education should take into account increasing cultural, linguistic and religious diversity among teachers and students.

27-28 May: The joint CoE/EWC Expert group working on the implementation the CoE Recommendation CM Rec (2008) 12 “Dimension of religions and non-religious convictions within intercultural education” will meet in Paris. They will produce a document encouraging political and educational stakeholders to implement the Recommendation. A number of issues will be addressed helping to implement the Recommendation in different educational contexts, accompanied by good practice examples. The work of the expert group will be finished by the end of 2013.

29-31 May: 4th Nordic Conference on subject knowledge in school and teacher education - in Trondheim, Norway. EWC’s Head of Research is giving a session on concept learning as key element in democratic and intercultural learning processes.

2-5 June: The 22nd annual conference of the European Access Network (EAN) is organised in collaboration with the Council of Europe. The conference will be held in Strasbourg, at Council of Europe Headquarters, where EWC's Executive Director will take part.
