The Council of Europe organized, in co-operation with the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, a conference on “Universities as Actors of Intercultural Dialogue in Wider Society”, in Moscow, June 2009. The EWC Executive Director, Ana Perona-Fjeldstad took part in this conference. The conference report is now available.

This year’s start to the academic calendar will be a very special one for a group of students in Moscow. Three of Moscow’s Universities have signed a formal agreement with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to introduce a new academic specialization at the Master’s level in human rights studies.

The Summer Academy ’Democracy at School’ was held July 10-17, 2010 in Sulejówek, Poland. Teachers, head teachers and NGO representatives from 7 countries joined the Academy. During the week, the participants got to know tools for the classroom, whole school strategies, and drafted an action plan with steps for their own school.

The International Association of Universities and Notre Dame University – Louaize are jointly organizing the 2009 IAU International Conference on The Role of Higher Education in Fostering the Culture of Dialogue and Understanding. It will be held at and hosted by Notre Dame University – Louaize in Lebanon, on November 4-6, 2009.

The European Wergeland Center in cooperation with Oslo University College is organizing the seminar "Religious Diversity in Intercultural Education - policies and practices" on the 2nd of March, 2010. The seminar is open to everyone.

Queen's University is now inviting applications for the sixth year of the postdoctoral fellowship program in "Democracy and Diversity". Each year, one non-renewable 12-month fellowship will be awarded. The 2010-11 fellowship will start on July 1, 2010.

The International Academy on "Remembrance and Human Rights" will take place in Berlin from March 14-19, 2010. For the second time the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future organizes this academy for multipliers in educational work. Application deadline: January 20, 2010.

The International Human Rights Exchange (IHRE) is the world's only full-semester, multidisciplinary program in human rights for undergraduate students. The program is housed at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Application Deadline: March 1, 2010

The three month course at the University of Nottingham gives students an in-depth understanding of international human rights standards and the international machinery of the United Nations, Council of Europe, the OAS and the African Union. The course also shows how these standards are implemented and how they work in practice. There are two programmes each year: January to March and September to December.

The University of Oslo organizes the conference "Culture, Civilization and the World – the Semantics of Globalization" from Januar 25-26. EWC's Research Coordinator Dr. Claudia Lenz will be giving a lecture on: "Citizenship – an ambigram in the context of national and global interpretations".
