  • Recognizing Intercultural Comptence

    A meeting on the development of an operational description of Intercultural Competence was held in Strasbourg on February 16-17. A group of experts worked towards a list of indicators, formulated as observable behaviors, related to the components of Intercultural Competence. The work builds on the results of the Think Tank on Intercultural Education that took place in October, 2011 in Norway.

  • Tool box for Education for Democracy

    On January 26-27, a special interest group of the Pestalozzi Network of Trainers met for the 2nd time to develop learning resources related to the recognition of learning in the context of education for democracy. This work is a part of the cooperation between CoE Pestalozzi Programme and EWC to develop a tool box for education for democracy.

  • The Intercultural Glossary Project

    The Norwegian and German students participating in the peer learning activities related to the Intercultural Glossary Project met in Trondheim January 20-23; Visiting places that are linked to the idea and construction of «Norwegian cultural heritage» and getting to know the narratives, interpretations and debates related to them. It was closely related to the conceptual learning activities.

  • Democratic School Development

    Educators' Consultation in Hamburg: During the 2-day workshop, 13-14 January, the research perspectives the students had developed based on their work with EDC and democratic school development during the fall term were successfully linked to concrete democratic school development projects in the Hamburg region.

In his statement, Barrett places the conceptualization of Intercultural Competence in the framework of Council of Europe policy and provides a profound overview regarding theoretical approaches towards Intercultural Competence.

      A European Perspective on Education about Religions and other Worldviews

      Today’s debate in Westminster, London will be about religion in schools in Britain. In his presentation, Robert Jackson will focus on a wider European perspective to the UK debates. He suggests that – along with key European Institutions, such as the Council of Europe – we need to ground our thinking about religious education in a human rights framework that recognises freedom of religious or non-religious belief as a value.       Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child (2012-2015)

      The Council of Europe has adopted a new strategy to protect and promote children’s rights. The strategy is a response to the needs expressed by governments, professionals working with children, civil society and children themselves who ask for more efforts to be made in implementing existing standards. In order to achieve this, the Council of Europe will provide guidance and support to its 47 member states on how best to bridge gaps between the rights and the reality of children in Europe.

      What's the Place of Faith in Schools?

      Prof Robert Jackson will take part in a public debate on "Faith in Schools" with Prof Richard Dawkins and two other speakers including the Bishop of Oxford, who is the spokesperson on religious education for the Church of England. The debate will take place in Westminster on 22 February. This upcoming debate is attracting a lot of attention and will include members of Parliament and the House of Lords. It will be chaired by Charles Clarke, former UK Minister of Education.
